Patient FAQ
What does "Clearance" actually mean?
"Clearance" is the clinical term used when your sample shows Azoospermia (zero sperm). According to BAUS standards, we provide clearance if a fresh, centrifuged sample shows no sperm. Please note that some surgeons may require two consecutive "clear" tests before advising you to stop using other forms of contraception.
What happens if sperm are still found?
It is not uncommon to see a few non-motile (dead) "residual" sperm in the first test. If this happens, we provide a detailed report for your surgeon and usually recommend a follow-up test 4 weeks later to ensure the count is trending toward zero.
Can I collect the sample at home?
Yes, but accuracy is paramount. The entire sample must be collected and delivered to our Manchester lab within 1 hour, kept at body temperature. For absolute certainty, we recommend using our private onsite collection rooms.
Is the test 100% accurate?
While no medical test is 100%, we use the highest level of testing available in the UK (WHO 6th Edition and BAUS protocols). This is designed to minimize the risk of "late recanalization," where the tubes naturally rejoin.
